Meet Tina's Study Album: The Playlist That Works Like a Study System

April 22, 2026

Tina

Sitting down to study should feel simple. You have your study plan ready, you know the topic you’re focusing on, and the resources you need to ace the session. Only there’s a problem...

You sit down, only to find your brain doesn’t follow. Instead of working through problems, you feel stuck on step one. You get frustrated and reach for your phone. Sometimes, you can feel tired before you’ve even started. Other times, you feel overwhelmed minutes into the session.

How do I know? I’ve been there too.

I’m Tina, Chief Student Ambassador at TOEFL®. Today I’m here to try and help you get the most out of your study sessions.

Like many students, I thought the solution to these problems was simply “try harder.” Be more disciplined. Push through discomfort. I’d spend hours searching “how to focus while studying” instead of doing the work. That was until I learned the truth:

Focus isn’t just effort. It’s about your mental state.

The reality is, if your mental state isn’t aligned, studying can feel 10x harder than it should.

That’s why I created Future Me Calling: a study playlist for test prep designed to support focus, motivation, and study habits.

Why Your Study Playlist Might Not be Working

Like many students, I used to rely on random study playlists. You know the ones... “Lofi beats,” “deep focus,” “study vibes.”

While they’re great at helping you relax (sometimes a little too much), they’re not built for you as a test taker.

They’re simply a collection of calm and relaxing songs. There’s no structure. No progression. No intention. They don’t help your brain move from distracted to focused, they just help to calm you.

So, even with the help of music, you could still be stuck trying to force yourself to concentrate. That’s why I wanted to create something different. Music scientifically designed to get you into that flow state.

What is my Study Album?

I created Future Me Calling because I needed a better way to study, and I knew other test takers did too.

This isn’t just a playlist of my favorite songs (though I might share that another time...) It’s an album I built intentionally to help you get into a focused study state and stay there.

Rather than an album, think of it as a study system of sounds. When you press play, you’re not just listening to music that helps you relax. You’re starting your own guided transition from your brain’s current state, into deep, productive focus.

The science (quickly, I promise)

I’ll keep this section simple. When I created the album, I wanted it to be more than just music to study to. Instead of finding some relaxing beats, I looked at how neuroscience and music therapy impact your brain. This is how I created my approach.

Your brain responds to rhythm and tempo more than you might think.

Fast, unpredictable sounds are great for keeping you alert, but they can also keep you distracted.

Slower, consistent rhythms are great at calming your mind but can also make you feel too relaxed if you leave them on for too long.

The secret is gradual changes in tempo. Gradual changes can help your brain shift states, supporting your ability to focus and “get in the zone.”

That’s the idea behind this album. Instead of focusing on one type of sound, it guides you into a focus state step by step.

A quick look at each track

Each track in Future Me Calling has been chosen with a purpose in mind. Here’s how I designed it.

1. The Arrival

This is where your session begins.

You might be feeling distracted, you could feel stressed. I didn’t want the first track to put too much pressure on you. It’s designed to help you settle into your session and begin studying with music.

2. The Shift

Now we start building momentum. The rhythm becomes steadier. Your mind starts to slow down. You’re not fully focused just yet, but you’re getting closer.

3. The Lock-In

This is the moment things click. You feel focused. Studying starts to feel natural. You’re no longer fighting with your mind, it’s working with you.

4. Deep Work Mode

This is where you start to do your most difficult tasks. Reading, listening, and writing. During this track, your work starts to feel natural instead of being forced.

5. Sustain

It’s easy to lose focus. Sometimes it's too easy. This track will help you stay focused, helping you to study for longer than you usually would.

6. The Exit

This part matters more than people think.

Remember that feeling of being drained after studying? This track helps you come out of focus feeling clear and in control, reducing that draining feeling.

How I recommend you use it

If you’re going to get the most out of my study album, here’s how you should approach it:

Start from the beginning

Don’t skip songs, move through them naturally. Each song has a purpose and will help you ease into a state of focus.

Decide your task first

Before you press play, prepare your task. Are you working on a reading, listening, writing or speaking task? What’s the goal? Do you have all of your resources?

Commit to one full session

Let the playlist play all the way through. No switching music. No distractions. No shuffle mode.

Notice how you feel

Pay attention to when you feel a shift. Most students feel a change several tracks in.

Q&A: Your questions about studying with music

“Will this distract me?”

Not if you use it the way it’s designed. It’s built to support your focus, not distract you. In my opinion, it could be some of the best music for studying...

“Is this better than silence?”

For some students, silence can make their minds wonder. Studying with music gives your brain an anchor, helping you focus and remain focused throughout your session.

“What if it doesn’t work right away?”

That’s okay and completely normal. Don’t put pressure on yourself. Give the playlist a try for a few sessions and your brain will build an association between music and studying.

“Can I use it for every section?”

Yes! This playlist is designed as a study playlist for test prep. It works well for reading, listening, and writing. It can also be used during preparation for your speaking test prep.

What I want you to take away

You don’t have a focus problem, you were just never shown how to enter a focused state! Unlike other study music for exams, this album is my way of helping you get focused and stay focused.

So, the next time you sit down to study, don’t rely on willpower alone. Press play and together we’ll get through your test prep!

Stay tuned! I’ll have more TOEFL test study tips on the way!
